76 78 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Big Red rules!, October 6, 2010 I love horses, especially Thoroughbred, and Secretariat, whose nickname was "Big Red" was one of the best. This film, he does justice. Diane Lane, the owner of the horse and stables, is an exquisite work in its role as a stable owner and extraordinarily elegant woman gutsy. John Malkovich is perfect as a trainer of Big Red, very experienced a geek that finally gets his chance to get the glory in the shape of a horse. Now that I've seen the movie can't imagine any other actors in those roles. Photography competitions, including closeups of the horse's back end hind legs and hooves fills the screen and throw trash at full speed, is amazing. I knew already the story of the Secretariat, and I was wondering if it was worth going to see a movie that just told that story over again, but wow! It was always worth it. help other customers find the most useful reviews This review was helpful?

I think I was the only one in the theater who didn't know the check-out come for all through the movie I felt as if I was the only a clapping or gripping arms side of my seat ... the film about made my heart burst because of anticipation and desire for the underdog to win! I loved the racing scene in this film, the beauty of a running horse, and execution, the decline of each of its muscles, doing what you know was born to do! Communication/love between Big Red and her owner is heart-breaking and one that can be a real animal lover. This film was done wisely and I encourage everyone to go and see the "Secretariat"!!!! Stay until the end when they show that has played, for it is one of those great movies where you want to know what happened to all the key players.the end will share their site.
All my best to u-dogs and animal lovers worldwide!

# 6: Jillian Michaels-30 day Shred

Most helpful customer reviews

1602-1617 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 WOW out of 5 stars! Amazing!, 28 March 2008 this review is from: Jillian Michaels-30 day Shred (DVD) had never purchased a DVD Michaels Jillian first b/c of the hit or miss reviews. So when I heard rave about this, I decided to give it a shot and I'm so glad I did. This is an absolute ass workout-kicker. I am an intermediate/advanced exerciser (working out 5-6 days a week) so I figured I could see what was on level 1 and all level 2 pass immediately. Listen to me folks--these workouts are rigid. Level 2 was very difficult--a good hard though, very challenging. When Jillian tells you to start at level 1, listen to you know what it is doing. I've been at this for about 5 days, and already I feel a difference in my body.
Jillian is hard--absolutely no rest in this workout (even for a drink of water), but this is what makes it go so quickly, and makes your body changes, according to Jillian. You're done before you know it--but in the end you have received a kick butt workout and feel like you've really done something. She based her training on 3-2-1 Method: 3 minutes, 2 minutes cardio, abs 1 min. Its strength remind me of circuits of Jari love--compound exercises that work simultaneously on the upper and lower body. The cardio is good as well: a lot of jumping, so watch those knees (has a modifier for beginners and less impact) and the abs is straight up ab work--a variety of crunches and twists on the floor.
This is a great workout and I find Jillian will be tough, but she is very nice. Warning: you're no-nonsense. I think it's funny when the stretch she admits she isn't flexible and strives to achieve its feet on the floor. I thought "Ha, Ha, finally something that I am more Jillian!" lol
If you really want to get a good workout and jumpstart weight loss get this DVD will not be disappointed. It is ideal for those who are too short a time and try something new; each workout is less than 30 minutes! help other customers find the most useful reviews This review was helpful?

851 862 people found the following review helpful: 3.0 out of 5 stars I wish there were more workouts in this DVD, 27 May 2008 this review is from: Jillian Michaels-30 day Shred (DVD) first off, I give it 3 stars. I made only one, but it's a good job, very intense. I felt great afterwards. Also, I really like the trainer. You got me motivated to push my hardest to try and end of each financial year, that sometimes I couldn't make it (and I consider myself to be in good shape). My biggest complaint about DVDS is that it is told to start with level 1 and then progress to level 2 and level 3. But there is only one workout, workout level 1 to level 2 and level 3 workout. Accordingly, you are doing the same workout every day until you can move a layer. This can get tedious. In addition, we are working on the same tired and sore muscles that you worked the day before. My other complaints are a bit narrow: the music is awesome and it is not possible to skip through some of the things that at the beginning. As mentioned above, workouts are great and extremely challenging, but I don't use this DVD alone.

**********************************************************
UPDATE:

I now give this video 5 stars. One of the comments to my review suggested that I did not wait to move up in levels, rather, that I could make each level so that I am not doing the training itself again and again. Thanks to that person. Now I am switching around levels and I love it. Level 2 and 3 are more difficult, but I follow the "easier" than most of the exercises and make changes to some aerobic exercises that can be too hard (or can't I only). Today, this is my favorite DVD. Love it because it is quite difficult to actually replace the chi ... and at only 25 min.

JILLIAN kicks your [...], 2 April 2008 this review is from: Jillian Michaels-30 day Shred (DVD) Ok, if you're like me (overweight and unmotivated) and watch the biggest Loser and wish you could be one of the competitors and Jillian train then you're in luck! Buy the DVD! I just received the dvd today and made the first level today. Was 2 and 1/2 hours from the time I finished and I'm still shaking and difficult to go up and down the stairs. I can't even imagine what she puts those poor competitors ...LOL!

I have knee pain and pain in the feet and generally only walking 3 mph on my treadmill. Well, suffice it to say that I don't see any weight loss. And let me be honest, the real reason that I have knee problems and stroll is because I weigh too much. So I did the full on jumping Jack ...No change for the jumping Jack in this workout ...Jillian tells you straight, lb 400 people doing full jumping Jack, you can too! And he was right. Sure as heck really can't push up but I'm sure it will be able to finally if I keep doing this dvd every day for 20 minutes.

And he's right, you can't do a workout for 20 minutes and expect to be easy ... you want easy, don't get this dvd. You want to sweat and really this workout DVDs!

I'm 5 ' 4 '' e 168 lbs. I will let you know my progress in my comments over time. Good luck to all!

# 1: Red (Special Edition)

Most helpful customer reviews

123 of 126 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars great actors goofing off ... resulting in good time for everyone., October 16, 2010 this review is from: Red (Special Edition) (DVD) red is the action-comedy about a small group of retired CIA field operatives (pensioners, extremely dangerous ...R.E.D.) Who are targeted for elimination by nefarious and government groups must team up to combat the threat and reveal the culprit.

RED is a film of silly, but very funny. Is the kind of film that will not work, however, if we didn't already have enough strong impressions and sensations of its stars. If you already don't think Helen Mirren as the elegant actress who won an Oscar for THE QUEEN ... We laugh would not simply at the sight of his wielding a gun. If you do not particularly think Morgan Freeman to play God or the President or the Narrator silky tints of the March of the penguins ... we don't chuckle at his antics. Frankly, if you enjoyed the trailer for red, you will enjoy the movie. They provide a sense almost completed the tone of this movie. If you thought trailers looked simply silly and made you roll your eyes ... and then the movie will just multiply that feeling.

Personally, I thought it was a lot of fun. Actors are clearly having a ball and Bruce Willis (which doesn't really come across as old enough to be retired ... especially when he can still win scazzottate left and right) makes a good reception. He was coasting here, but as movie-goers, we are so comfortable with Willis and her shaved head which feels a little like we're simply visiting an old friend. Mary Louise Parker (WEEDS) is your interest whatsoever of love, a call center worker he was flirting with a long distance, but who now joins the escapades. Does a nice job evolving from mild to really enjoying the antics of concern. Mirren and Freeman are fun. Brian Cox is presented as a Soviet agent retired, and he shines in his accent over-the-top. Richard Dreyfuss appears in a couple of scenes and chews the scenery. You'd almost feel sorry for Karl Urban as the murderer on the trail of Willis ... He doesn't get much fun ... but he plays well. Able to predict him doing well as the protagonist of a series of actions straight-laced on CBS.

Best of all is the hilarious John Malkovich. Steals every scene he is with incredible ease. As the craziest of rossi, who gets to leave his tendencies to overact mightily just run wild ... and everything works. His facial expressions alone had the audience in stitches.

RED is not a classic movie by any means. But I must say, the 110 minutes I spent with these guys was a complete blast, guilty-pleasure. Maybe you are just the right age (46) in order to enjoy this particular cast goofing around ... but I noticed that a lot of guys looking for happy and 20-somethings all around me. I think this film is set to be a hit (with room sequel).

30 of 33 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars fun, exciting, fun!, October 18, 2010 this review is from: Red (Special Edition) (DVD) this movie has it all. It's got:

-A lot of action. Although Bruce Willis is playing a guy older, retired, had still merchandise. He is completely convincing. The rest of the cast offers as well.

-Funny moments-while it's not one thing, there are lots of fun and lightweight, with a few laugh out louds. Willis is the master of fun action flick and John Malkovich was surprisingly fun. The rest of the cast also contributed as straight guys.

-Romance-Bruce Willis and Mary-Louise Parker really work. I don't want to spoil any surprises, but lets say that starts and ends in a surprising, and they had good chemistry.

-Character development-surprisingly well done for an action flick. Each character truly has been defined, and you get to care of them.

-Suspense-it was really a good story and well written. It was full of twists and surprises, with plenty of moments "edge of your seat".

-Excellent cast-the power of star in this film was blinding. These people really shined. No stars for nothing. Each person was fantastic in their role.

At the beginning of the movie dragged a bit, but once it was off, really flew.

It was a really enjoyable film. Highly recommend this film, however please don't bring young kids as a family in the theater. There is too much violence for children.

34 of 39 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Howling good fun, October 24, 2010 this review is from: Red (Special Edition) (DVD) I mean, everything that characterizes the Dame Mirren, an elegant evening dress and a machine-gun. 50 cal can't be all bad. Once you stop taking it seriously (sure something will happen soon), is a riot.

The key message is a boom ego-stroke: "don't mess with the old boys". Unfortunately, this is what happens. Retired CIA agents begin dying at an alarming rate. It turns out that the decedents all worked on a special mission — one that has worked on our heroes as well. So, when men come hit after hit men, the Chase is on. And, as the progresses reached higher and higher in the halls of Government. You know, the usual.

In this film, the fun is in getting there. Wise cracking of Bruce Willis plays well against John Malkovich character slightly deranged, easy-going character Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren balances both adds a touch of class. Then there is the character Mary-Louise Parker, Sarah, in a similar role of Diaz Knight and day not just as ridiculous. Keep your ears open for the jokes. There weren't enough times I was the only one laughing at the theater that I could listen to only one, too.

OK, maybe this is not one for the ages. It's a heck of a way to spend a Saturday night, though.

98 of 112 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Friendship, Betrayal, And Success--An Online Social Revolution Is Born From A Real World Social Ineptitude, October 28, 2010 Director David Fincher is back in fighting form! Those fearing he may have lost some of his bite with the ponderous "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" or the disappointing returns of the criminally overlooked "Zodiac" need not worry. "The Social Network" is a caustically funny and incredibly contemporary look at the evolution of Facebook. Playing like a thriller and a blisteringly dark comedy, this terrific film may be Fincher's most sophisticated piece to date (and certainly his most riveting since the days of "Seven" and "Fight Club"). On paper, "The Social Network" might not sound exhilarating but with the perfect screenwriter (Aaron Sorkin) and the perfect cast (Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, and Armie Hammer)--Fincher's tale of betrayal, pride, and avarice has become one of this year's must see films.

While I'm sure that everyone knows the subject matter of "The Social Network"--very briefly, the film's plot construction is structured as two pieces of litigation are being brought against Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (played with intensity by Eisenberg). One lawsuit is from his former business partner and best friend--a co-founder of the original website who got systematically squeezed out. The other is by a trio of Harvard grads (Armie Hammer plays 2 of the 3, they're twins, in a starmaking performance!) who claim Zuckerberg stole the idea from them after he was hired to create an exclusive dating site. Seen through these concurrent cases, deftly edited with flashback footage, the full picture starts to unravel. From Zuckerberg's social ineptitude, but superior intellect, a social revolution was born. And the more powerful Facebook grew, the more disconnected Zuckerberg became to his only friends and compelled by the drive for domination (his ultimate sense of acceptance).

Make no mistake, while "The Social Network" is incredibly smart and literate, it is also grandly entertaining. Screenwriter Sorkin (creator of "The West Wing" and my favorite "Sports Night") has put together what, in my opinion, is the best screenplay of the year. Sorkin is known for his whip fast dialogue and it is spot-on here! The movie is corrosively witty and uncompromisingly in your face. The film is cast with thoroughly unlikable types in a battle for supremacy. Eisenberg has never been better--no doubt Zuckerberg is a tool (both before and after his success), but Eisenberg makes you understand why and (I'm startled to say) actually appreciate it. Timberlake (as oily Napster creator Sean Parker) is a fantastically appealing devil-in-disguise, but as much as you may dislike him--he was integral to Facebook going wide. Hammer, as I said, is the film's biggest surprise. And Andrew Garfield, as Zuckerberg's betrayed partner, is vivid and alive--and, dare I say, the only character to elicit actual sympathy. But again, the film is merciless--even though we know that Garfield is screwed, we also know that it was an essential part of the successful expansion of Facebook. Business ethics be darned.

"The Social Network" is grown-up entertainment that has much to say about success in the modern era. I appreciated that no one veered away from the heart of darkness in this morality piece--that's what makes everything seem so relevant. Can someone be both repugnant and admirable? If you told me earlier in the year that a film about computer geeks at a keyboard would be edge-of-your-seat entertainment, I wouldn't have believed it. But here, I go. For sheer entertainment, remarkable performances, and an incredibly sophisticated screenplay--"The Social Network" is easily one of my favorite films of the year! Easily. KGHarris, 10/10.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, But Crazily Overrated, January 21, 2011 This review is from: The Social Network (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I saw The Social Network and when the movie was over, all i could think was, 'This is what the critics are freaking out about?' Now let me just say that the movie is a great one, the acting is top notch, but this movie is being very badly overrated. I can think of 5 movies off the top of my head that were better than this movie. Inception, The Kids are Alright, Black Swan, True Grit, Hell, even the latest Harry Potter was more enjoyable. Now let me just say again that i didn't completely hate the movie, it was great, but it is in no way the best movie of the year. The fact that it is being so overrated is what is making me angry.
Anyway, to quickly highlight the good and bad things.

Good:
Jesse Eisenberg, top class acting, he stole scenes easily.
Score, the score was surprisingly perfect for the movie, very nicely done.
The rest of the cast, Justin Timberlake was awesome as Sean Parker and even though her part was small, Rashida Jones was perfect. Andrew Garfield was very good as well.
Screenplay, wonderful.

Bad:
The movie got boring at times and I found myself yawning every once in a while, I found it hard to pay attention. Even though Jesse was acting beautifully as Mark Z, i found his character surprisingly hard to like. He acted like an ass that would make TV's House proud, but House is funny and likable at least while he is being an ass, Mark is not. I also found that Andrew's character got on my nerves for some reason, I just found that he seemed almost whiny and annoying.

So all in all, it is a good movie, but not the best like the so called 'critics' are saying it is.

22 of 32 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars BD Digipack, January 11, 2011 This review is from: The Social Network (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Presumably many have seen the film. Some comments on that later on.

The packaging, I think, is incredible. No, it is not packaged in a jewel-blue case like many BDs are. Like many of Fincher's previous DVD releases, it is packaged in a digipack cardboard design - equal in size to the blue jewel cases - as the likes of Seven, Fight Club, etc were released in their respective DVD versions.

The packaging is simplistic and chic. The paper has a nice rubbery/cloth like feel to it. I don't know the stock, but it a good quality and the slipcase is all black and embossed with phrasing from the log/taglines for the film. The inside has the familiar poster of a blurred out Zuckerberg with the "500 million friends" quote. The color image featured is simply a "wrap around" piece of standard cardboard that simply fits over the slipcase itself... not very practical or keepable, but was included probably at the request of the studio for ease of identification or whatever other stupid reasons the execs come up with. I'm probably throwing mine away.

BD transfer is superb. I did not notice any major changes from film to disc that I can recall, except maybe in the Henley rowing sequence. I think a slugline was added to the intro of the scene and the sound design seemed to feature some diagetic sounds occuring within the scene as opposed to just the score. It has been some time, so I could be mistaken.

The film itself is excellent and Fincher has definitely proved himself as a masterful director. The acting is excellent, the photography is superb, and the writing is outstanding. It's not just "a movie about facebook" it's more about the drama behind it, relationships, and psychological workings.

I predict an Oscar nod.

30 of 33 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars fun, exciting, fun!, October 18, 2010, this movie has it all.

34 of 39 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Howling good fun, October 24, 2010, I mean, everything that characterizes the Dame Mirren, an elegant evening dress, and a machine gun.

I think the originals should be included only to appease the die-hard & [really] old-school fans? Yes. Care if they are not included in the price? No No, I do not like every little thing that has been added, but I do appreciate him cleaning of certain special effects-so as not to leave these things bother me. I disagree that any change that did was for the better, but it's a great saga-deal with it. Once he made up his mind he probably isn't going to change it on a bunch of negative reviews on amazon.

Add on what another reviewer wrote, if you prefer the originals in their ' original ', then we prefer original and their quality is poorest '. And if so, why do you need these on bluray? They already exist on the dvd, so get those * and * save money.

Casual fans. excited for Blu rays, January 13, 2011 this review is from: Star Wars: The Complete Saga (episodes i-VI) [Blu-Ray] (Blu-ray) I can understand a lot of versions of topics about these reviews on Lucas releasing modified, etc. And that's fine, I guess if you're a fanatic completist/movies, although the majority of people, is already the DVD with the original versions, not to say you shouldn't desire them on Blu Ray. For someone like me, I remember looking at them when I was younger, had toys, I got into it during the reprints, played the game of cards, had the latest toys, but never collected them on vhs/dvd. And then some of the biggest movies were released on Blu-ray, since this version, although I would still consider myself a casual fan. That first shot is irrelevant to me, you'll enjoy them the same. Ive never seen the prequel and not wanted, but seeing as how to buy the complete set of 6 film is the only way to get the special features, I suppose its time to give them a whirl. help other customers find the most useful reviews  this review was helpful?

49 of 54 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!, October 29, 2010 This review is from: Archer: Season 1 (DVD) You know, I don't normally put my review titles in all caps. But what can I say? This show is... well, BRILLIANT! I've always thought that there are far, far too many five star reviews here on amazon. But if there ever was a show that genuinely deserved a rave, this is it. Oh, and for the record, for the purposes of this review I am writing solely about the show itself, not the DVD. At the time of writing, I have that on pre-order.

Archer is a wonderfully absurdist frolic for strictly adult audiences. Fundamentally this show is a giant spoof of 1960s spy thrillers; a spoof made for decidedly 21st century sensibilities. It's the show Get Smart would have been had all the characters been perpetually high on crystal meth.

In fact, the characters on Archer are all selfish, petty, and utterly and completely venal: the three great ingredients from which comedy is made. They seem to think and act more like deranged adolescents than grown-ups. Deranged adolescents with access to firearms. Add all this together and you get some idea of the flavor of the show. Archer is very much in the spirit of the original Williams Street adult swim cartoons, but is never merely derivative of them. Which of course is exactly what you'd expect, given that this show is produced by Adam Reed, whose previous producing and directing credits include both Sealab 2021 and Frisky Dingo. Indeed, Reed's voice credits go all the way back to the original Space Ghost Coast to Coast.

But while a similar sense of humor can be found throughout, Archer definitely has a flair all of its own. Visually it has kind of a pseudo-realist "ligne claire" (clear line) style that matches perfectly with the creatively anachronistic world the characters inhabit. Cell phones and other contemporary technologies may abound, but jet-age fashions still prevail, and the KGB and the Soviet Union remain major adversaries.

But the first thing long time hard core animation fans will notice is that voice of H. Jon Benjamin brings its own uniquely laconic comic genius to the title role of "Archer" himself. Many of us remember Benjamin best as Coach from Home Movies. Others may recognize his voice from various bit parts in Family Guy and the Venture Bros.. But wherever you know him from, I for one am overjoyed that a suitable vehicle has finally been found for this great talent.

Better yet, Benjamin is complemented by scarcely lesser talents such as Aisha Tyler, a standup comedian who plays Lana Kane, another top operative at the same spy agency; and Jessica Walter, who plays the head of the agency - who also just happens to be Archer's mother. However, I should stress that this rather unusual combination of relationships is never reduced to mere sit-com hijinx. Archer is the kind of show were things get genuinely disturbing. In fact, this is one of those rare shows where the entire cast is incredibly strong - and backed up by an equally strong writing team, too.

What more can I say? See it!

Theo.

21 of 27 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Awful!, October 27, 2010 This review is from: Archer: Season 1 (DVD) Adam Reed has an impressive resume. With each series he has gotten better at his craft and drawn a bigger following. Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, Frisky Dingo. Watch some of those in order and then the extraordinary (ultra-raunchy) humor and overall quality of "Archer" won't surprise you much. The animation and production values are better. The setting ("James Bond meets Arrested Development," says Reed) is better. The stories are better (and funnier, oh are they funnier).

But none of that matters. What matters is the way the characters are hilariously brought to life through the exceptional dialog and voice acting, much of which is ad-libbed. The timing, so important to...("to what?" "First of all...") to comedy, borders on miraculous.

Never mind, forget all that pedantic nonsense. This is simply the funniest damn show I have ever seen, and if you are 18 or older you must buy it now. Go!

14 of 18 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy, Sexist, And Oh So Wrong--This Cartoon Isn't Bad, It's Just Drawn That Way, November 4, 2010 This review is from: Archer: Season 1 (DVD) In an effort to capitalize on the audience from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia," the FX network has tried a number of promising shows. "Sunny," to me, has always been a completely inspired bit of lunacy that defies everything about the age of political correctness in which we find ourselves. It is so wrong--but that's what makes it so right. Unapologetically demented and offensive, the show has moments of brilliance. "Archer," of all the programs that have followed the "Sunny" time slot comes the closest to the ribald and irreverent tone and works exceedingly well as a companion piece.

"Archer" is a terrifically entertaining animated piece featuring perhaps the most obnoxious and oblivious central characters you're likely to encounter. Sterling Archer (aka Duchess) is a spy who fulfills every sexist cliche one might expect from a boozy, clueless, womanizing James Bond wannabe! In other words, he is awesome! Voiced impeccably by H. Jon Benjamin, it is sheer madness to follow Archer as he blunders his way through assignments, familial entanglements, and romantic assignations. His flirtations with fellow spy Lana (Aisha Tyler), his rivalry with Lana's new beau Cyril (Chris Parnell), his workplace banter with easy Cheryl and inappropriate Pam (Judy Greer and Amber Nash), and his wonderfully dysfunctional mother love (the incredible Jessica Walter) are juggled nicely amidst a bevy of "Get Smart" missions. It's all great, but patently disturbing, fun.

Season One represents 10 episodes. Two standouts to me are "Mole Hunt"--the first episode, and perhaps the funniest, that strikes the perfect balance of wackiness and character introduction--and "Honeypot" where Archer must put his life and his body on the line as an irresistible gay boy toy. By all means, check this series out if you like comedy that straddles the line of good taste and then jumps over it! I loved this creation named Archer and his relationship with his mother is one of this great show's true highlights. Benjamin and Walter are a perfect pair! About 4 1/2 stars. KGHarris, 11/10.

129 of 130 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, if a tad flawed, Edwardian series, November 13, 2010 This review is from: Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey (DVD) Julian Fellowes has mined his script for Gosford Park, and took a few cues from the beloved 1970s series Upstairs, Downstairs - Collector's Edition Megaset (The Complete Series plus Thomas and Sarah), to create Downton Abbey, a stunning and colorful drama set around the aristocratic Crawley family and the staff which serves them. Set between 1912 and 1914, Downton Abbey chronicles the conflict of class, gender, and politics, and serves it up with a refreshing dollop of sizzle and scandal. Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, and Dame Maggie Smith (as Robert, Earl of Grantham, Cora, Countess of Grantham, and Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham, respectively) are knock outs, but the rest of the cast are no slouches either, with the stunning Michelle Dockery at the forefront as Lady Mary Crawley, who is the selfish, proud, and vindictive eldest daughter you can't help but like. The actors and the stunning interiors of Highclere Castle, home to the Earls of Carnarvon, give Downton Abbey a glossy, sophisticated sheen, even when the script's twists and turns can be a bit of a let-down. Nevertheless, the drama is engrossing and invigorating, and a worthy addition to the collection of any period drama aficionado--and anyone who likes good drama, period! 79 of 85 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Series!, November 16, 2010 This review is from: Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey (DVD) ALERT: Possible Spoilers! But I'll try not to give away that much . . .

I found about this series after watching the final episode of Sherlock on PBS. I'm a huge fan of period dramas and after seeing the trailer for Downton Abbey, I knew I had to give it try.

Downton Abbey opens in 1912, following the sinking of the Titanic on which the heir of Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham's estate, dies. This leaves the family in a bit of a tizzy trying to figure out who would be next to inherit the estate since the Crawleys have three daughters who aren't entitled to the entailment. Enter Matthew Crawley (the gorgeous Dan Stevens a.k.a "Edward Ferrars" from the 2008 Sense and Sensibility--whistle, whistle) as next in line and of course, not everyone is thrilled with the idea.

Meanwhile, we have the privledge of witnessing the bitter but incredibly fascinating sibling rivalry of the two eldest of the Earl's daughters, Mary and Edith. Mary was engaged to the original heir of Downton Abbey but it was Edith who truly loved him. As if that wasn't enough, the oldest, Mary, is seemingly the favorite of the girls' mother who's almost sole occupation is to marry her off (especially now that the entailment has gone to a "stranger" and her father will not fight it). Edith, on the other hand, is constantly overlooked and according to her mother, Cora, will more than likely be the one to take care of her and the Earl in their old age. The Earl's youngest daughter, Sybil, however, is the personification of quiet strength. Super sweet but definitely not a push over, she is a firm advocate for Women's Rights and doesn't have any qualms about expressing her opinion, even if it means getting in trouble with her father.

Downstairs, we have the arrival of the mysterious Mr. Bates (Brendan Coyle, Robert Timmens of Lark Rise to Candleford--whistle, whistle again!!) who develops feelings for head housemaid, Anna and vice versa but their station (and his secrets) make their romance a bit difficult. Put off by Bates' arrival and the idea of the "lower station" of footman is the uber-villianous Thomas (I guarantee, you will hate this guy!). Aided by the equally nasty Miss O'Brien, they plot to get rid of Mr. Bates at almost all costs.

Of course, there are tons of subplots: Matthew's determination not to be changed by the inhabitants of Downton, the butler's "shameful" past, a maid's dissatisfaction of working in service and hopes for better employment, secret (and some not so secret) crushes, and lots more.

Interspersed throughout the series are a number of memorable characters. Most notably, the fabulous Maggie Smith, who lends a lot of sass (and some hilarious one-liners) to this series as Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham (the Earl's mother). We also have Jim Carter (Captain Brown from Cranford) as Carson, the loyal butler of the Crawley family and Penelope Wilton (Mrs. Hamley from Wives and Daughters) as Isobel Crawley, the mother of new heir Matthew and recurring sparing partner of Violet.

This season of the series ends at the Crawleys' garden party at which the Earl informs his guests that they are at war with Germany. Up to that point, a scandalous secret about Lady Mary is leaked that virtually ruins her reputation and she plots revenge on its revealer. A new "development" arises that may alter Matthew's chances for gaining the Earl's estate. Matthew, who himself finds a sparing partner in Mary, inevitably falls in love with her. She says that her feelings are mutual but he is unsure whether she wants him for himself or because of his prospect has heir to her father's estate.

I found this to be a thoroughly entertaining series. Can't wait for Season 2.

48 of 53 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Nobody does it better than the British, November 11, 2010 This review is from: Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey (DVD) I became aware of this wonderful ITV series while reading a message board about Larkrise to Candleford (another great series, highly recommended). I've just viewed it on youtube thank you british folks! After I watched it, it occurred to me that it was somewhat like "Upstairs Downstairs" in that you saw the workings "above the stairs" and was as down. The difference is that it is set in a magnificent country mansion (or seat, whatever, I'm not british).

It's set in the early 1900s. The costumes and settings are superb.

I did feel the earl was a little to egalitarian concerned about the downstairs staff, just too "nice". From the series 1901 house, on pbs, the servants/staff were to be as out of view as possible.

    Highly recommended.

282 of 306 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars, best one of the series, June 30, 2010 I have to say I normally don't review movies. I usually try to stick with books (haha hence my name) I also tend not to see movies that were based on books, they are never right ie: Eragon, Blood and Chocolate and yes even the Harry Potters movies were missing tons of sides stories that were in the books. I saw Twilight the day it came out and was both relieved that it was so close to the book, and frustrated because like the book it lacked action. Only the last five minutes had any fighting. The same was true in New Moon, while it followed the book closely it was only the last 10 minutes where Edward fought with the Volturi that were action packed. I have to say I really liked Eclipse. I found that with all of Stepenie Meyer's books (especially Breaking Dawn) there was a huge build up towards the battle scenes, then it just fell apart. Yes it's for a younger age group, but sometimes a little more fighting and action is good. Eclipse delivered good action through out the movie, especially the 'big battle' I found myself wishing that the screen writers would have put this much effort into the first two with the action. David Slade, the director, also did Hard Candy (amazing movie) and 30 Days of Night. I think it was brilliant to bring him in on the project and hope he stays for Breaking Dawn.

I also am glad to say that Kristen Stewert has better facial expressions in this movie. She doesn't look like her face is frozen in only two expressions. Edward also delivers more side comments with good comedic timing. Jacob is hurt in this movie, but the interaction between all three is much less forced and more natural than the first two movies. It is without a doubt the best of the bunch. I won't bog down this review with the plot, because obviously 99% of the people going to Eclipse have read the book at least twice. I can say though that unlike the other two movies, I actually found myself wondering what happens next, and looking forward to how Bella and Edward (and yes Jacob) would react. I'd say if you've been on the fence about the other two movies go see this one, if you hated the first two movies, this one is infinitely better and if you loved the first two movies, I can only say you will love this one even more.

255 of 287 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Loved Every Minute of a Film They Finally Got Right (And Can't Understand All the Hate), July 7, 2010 This review is from: The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Two-Disc Special Edition) (DVD) Prior to going to the theatre, I sat down to watch the first two installments of the Twilight saga; as a habit, I try to re-watch movies whenever a sequel comes out, just to get an idea of how the series progressed and developed. And in all honesty, both contributed to my overall impression and appreciation of Eclipse.

Twilight is a movie I've never really had an opinion on one way or another; it wasn't the greatest movie I've ever seen, but it wasn't a complete train-wreck. Looking back at it now, I have to say that it is very painful to watch. I, personally, found this first installment to be very mediocre and primitive. Everything in it--the corny music, the blue filters, the choppiness, the transition, the plot selection--felt like a crappy teen flick. But the weakest point of this movie was the lead acting, so weak in fact, that it made the story more difficult to watch. The entire time, I could not focus on anything but the fact that Kristen Stewart kept letting her mouth hang open and scoffing/sighing with every line, while a somewhat aggressive Rob Pattinson kept awkwardly twitching and cringing as if he was in pain. There was no buildup to the romance whatsoever, and it left me wondering why Bella and Edward were even a couple. It wasn't until I got the books for Christmas that I read the story and figured out what was supposed to happen.

New Moon was a fair improvement, coming from a director whose work I generally like. The music selection was much better and more appropriate, the graphics a bit more exciting and the color-scheme more natural. Can't say that the transitions from every scene were done well; this movie still felt like it could be more uniform. And I absolutely loved the entire sequence in Voltera, Italy; that depiction alone is reason enough not to discount New Moon's cinematography. But though this movie was well-shot and produced, once again, the lead acting lacked. Rob made a change, which unfortunately went in the other direction, making him too robotic and emotionless. In my mind, I started to question whether he even had any talent or was just a poor actor. It wasn't until I saw Remember Me that I thought that he had any potential. And Kristen, who at least limited her scoffing to only two or three times, did not shed a single tear in any of the key scenes. Thankfully, her acting was balanced out by Taylor Lautner's, who actually gave a great portrayal of Jacob.

The minute I sat down to watch Eclipse, I had high hopes that David Slade would finally give the Twilight series what it needed - some quality - and walking out at the end of the film, I was anything but disappointed. The flow of the movie was very smooth, and I was actually surprised at how fast it was coming to an end. The special effects and fighting scenes were precisely shot, and the snow-capped mountainside was breathtaking. I am not a Twi-hard, teenager, housewife or part of whatever other stereotype is used to describe people who like this series, but I absolutely loved this movie from beginning to end. In fact, for the first time, I felt like I was watching a re-make of the series with new actors and overall better cinematography.

My biggest surprise was the acting. For the first time, Rob actually nailed Edward's personality and depicted him as he was meant to be--sensitive, caring, loving, witty, protective, etc. Every scene he did, whether angry or laid back, was spot-on and believable, all creepiness and awkwardness aside. FINALLY! And Kristen, though still not at her best, actually smiled and laughed and was fun as opposed to depressed and introverted. This improvement from both of them made all the intimate scenes feel more natural and the romance more believable. All the actors, in fact, especially Jackson Rathborne and Nikki Reed, really stepped up to the plate and played their characters well.

Although no movie will ever give a faithful adaptation of any book, Eclipse got pretty close. And though there were certain liberties taken with the plot, which I remembered well, they did not detract from the key ideas. Overall, the movie hit on all the aspects of Bella's feelings/decisions about love, family, marriage and human life through different interactions with all the characters. Even if I hadn't read the book, I felt like as a viewer, I had enough information to understand her struggle and ultimate choice.

I know that there is always a negative for every positive, so there are plenty of haters of this film. But despite the complaints about the substance/content of the story (which should be attributed to the novelist, not the director), I feel it's unfair to deny that this is more mature, professionally made film that actually breathed some life into what could have otherwise been a cheesy, teen flick.

Bella seems much more relaxed this time, Charlie does a great job playing the dad who doesn't quite like his daughter's choice of a boyfriend, and there is a nice scene from Florida with Bella and her mom.

The entire Cullen clan get more screen time, and although I love each and every one of them, I have to say Rosalie was especially striking this time, and Jasper was absolutely perfect in his role, with his slight southern accent, and exceptional fighting abilities. They also take us back in time detailing how these two became vampires.

If Jacob is the one you love then you will feel a little sorry for him, as he is having a tough time both mentally and physically, but the rest of the wolf pack are in good shape and ready for the big fight. They also include a really interesting scene of the Quileute history.

Most everything from the book that should have been included, has been, including the very important tent scene, which is my personal favorite ( I just love the conversation between Edward and Jacob.) Then finally we get to the action with the Cullen's and Quileutes coming together to take care of Victoria and those nasty newborn's.

I can't think of a thing I didn't like in this film, and I will definitely be buying the DVD when it is available.

50 of 56 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the movie before blu-ray release., August 11, 2010 The A-Team is what movies used to be and should be now: fun. We used to herald the mindless summer blockbuster back when the explosions were fire and not CG, when Bruce Willis was all you needed to make a movie great, and an excellent plot was something you only expected to find in dramas filled with stuffy British accents. Yes, the majority of film has always sucked but we didn't care because we weren't paying $12.50 to see what's being shuffled down our throats today. As indie film has taken over the mutliplexs, the only escape we have to someplace fun is through stuff with Shia Lebouf in it. Disgrace, I tell you! But not all is lost. We have people like Joe Carnahan who still know how to make a night at the movies a blast.

Now, the critics panned this movie because it's short on plot and way too loud. Dude, it's based on The A-Team. The A-Team was a show about fast and violent missions with Mr. T preferring not to fly and Hannibal loving when a plan comes together. You didn't watch The A-Team for MASH, you watched it because it was cool. And that's exactly what this movie is. Cool. It's a thrill ride from the very beginning to the very end and not a lot of movies can deliver on that promise. Some twists are predictable and you're satisfied when you see it coming. Some are not and you're satisfied because you're surprised. I don't want to spoil anything about the story but the basic plot is all you really need. This movie is a video game in that you first get the reason to want to shoot things and then all you want to know next is where to get the ammo. It's loud and shaky, as is the trend with today's action movies, but not obnoxious like that other "we were framed and now we're super mad about it. As a team because camaraderie is important" movie, The Losers. Plus Sharlto Copley and Liam Neeson are fine, fine actors and you can't go wrong with 'em.

64 of 77 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars "I LOVE IT When A Plan Comes Together!", June 21, 2010 The movie begins in Mexico, where Hannibal Smith (Liam Neeson taking the part of George Peppard) is about to get a bullet in the head for bribing (obviously) the wrong cop. B.A. Baracus (Quinton Jackson taking the part of Mr. T., complete with "PITY" and "FOOL" on his knuckles) is down the road a piece, fighting a bunch of dirtbags over his van. Face (Bradley Cooper, taking the place of Dirk Benedict) is still the ladies' man. As a matter of fact, he is wedged into several truck tires while some woman's husband is beating him in the face for boinking his wife. Hannibal and BA arrive just in time to save Face from becoming toast. Crazy-as-a-bed-bug Murdock is discovered in a hospital while they are getting BA stitched up. All 4 guys are former Rangers so they bond big time.

Murdock is still an unmatched pilot. BA still has to be medicated to fly. Hannibal still chomps a cigar. And Face is still Face. Right after they cross the border back into the USA, they get involved in trying to acquire some $100 counterfeit plates, being moved by Saddam loyalists from Bagdad, and, oh yeah, over $1 billion in cold phony bills.

Much of this 2010 movie is filmed in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. It's about 2 hours of action and comedy. Steven Cannell is involved in the production, as with the popular series from the "old" days. They kept the integrity of the oh-so-popular series with lots of action and lots of comedy. There are tons of neat stunts, although some may be pretty close to impossible. But what the heck--that's what makes a movie like this fun! We have chopper and airplane stunt flying, action on a container ship, and the strategizing of perfectly timed plans, among other adventures the boys have.

I absolutely loved the movie and will most definitely watch it again. FYI, I do NOT remember any "F" type language, which is rare today--just lots of action and blow-em-up stuff.

I LOVE IT when a movie comes together!

Immediately after the credits, you will see a short cameo appearance of the former Face, Dirk Benedict. (My son met him when he was about 3 years old and will always remember how nice Dirk was to him.)

29 of 33 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars What a wild ride...., December 17, 2010 I was hesitant to watch this because I was afraid it was going to be campy....like a very sad "Dukes Of Hazard" movie tribute to the eighties series...well let me tell you I couldn't have been more wrong..."The A-Team" movie was nothing short of a wild ride with JATO rockets strapped on for good measure. Never a dull moment...and Jessica Biel well what can I say...shes the kind of woman that makes you stammer seeing a picture of her shes that hot...but I digress...If I were you, and I was, I would spend the 2 hours and 4 bucks, which I did, for a truly entertaining evening, and it was, with great acting off the charts completely ridiculous action sequences and a Plan that truly came together...

As a note...for a previous reviewer...don't be a schmuck and give a bad review to a movie because the service providing it failed...what are you 12...suck it up there Happy Feet....grab your sippy cup and get yourself a kool-aid refill you'll feel much better...and next time perhaps you could try customer support with the rest of the adults and not throw a tantrum cuz sissy took your rattle...

to everyone else sorry for the rant

I have never reviewed a movie before "The A-Team" but this movie was not only great it more then exceeded my expectations...motivating me to take the extra time to not only review the movie but also chastise a tool for misrepresenting it...

See the movie you won't be disappointed.
